Malindi Beach Boys

Beyond the Sand and Waves: Malindi’s Young Faces of Coastal Tourism

Walking along the beach, I let the salty breeze cool my heels and the soft sand soothe my steps. That is when two young men approached me.

"Karibu Malindi boss, hapa ndo Marine Beach, twende tukuonyeshe coral reefs" they said, inviting me to explore the reefs.

During low tide, it is common for beach boys to wade through the shallow waters and show visitors coral formations. They explain how to avoid damaging the coral and share local stories about the reef ecosystem.

The youth here are proud of their coastal culture. Tourism gives them an opportunity to earn, learn English, and interact with international visitors.

Despite challenges like rising sea levels and competition from resorts, these young Malindi locals are creative in showcasing eco-tourism and community-based experiences.

Tourism is most powerful when it creates opportunity, preserves culture, and protects nature for generations to come.
